The Weekend Gap

Many children in our community rely on school breakfast and lunch programs during the week. But when Friday afternoon comes, those supports disappear.

For children facing food insecurity, weekends become a time of anxiety, discomfort, and hunger.

“It’s hard to focus on learning when you’re thinking about your next meal.” — Elementary school teacher, Barrie

The Reality in Our Community

1 in 6 Canadian children lives in a food-insecure household.

For these kids, weekends can mean long hours without enough to eat—and the effects show up quickly.

Hunger doesn’t just cause discomfort. It makes it harder for children to concentrate in school, manage their emotions, and stay healthy over time. Teachers often notice the difference on Monday mornings when students who faced a weekend without enough food are more tired, more distracted, and less ready to learn.

Access to reliable, nutritious food doesn’t just fill stomachs - it supports healthy development.

  • Nutritious meals fuel brain development and emotional stability
  • Well-fed children are more likely to attend school consistently
  • Children feel valued and cared for when their basic needs are met

“My daughter used to come home Friday worried about food. Now she smiles when she opens her backpack.”

Why Your Support Is Essential

Kids Pantry is 100% community funded. We don’t receive government support. That means every meal we send is made possible by people like you - who believe that no child should be left behind on the weekend.

  • $25 support one child for a weekend
  • $100 supports one child for a month
  • $1,300 supports one child for an entire year
  • $13,000 supports a school for an entire year

With your help, we turn weekends from a time of worry into a time of relief.
